AI in Theology

Homework and sermon preparation are times for you to reflect on the Bible and commentary material with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Using AI to prepare research papers, sermons, or other material robs you of the ability to hear from the Holy Spirit.

AIs use internet material that is of the lowest quality (usually high school level research). The AI only has available non-academic and untrustworthy internet information. Good commentaries and Bible encyclopedias are not available to AIs (publishers keep these locked in libraries or for purchase only). There is a large difference between a scholarly commentary versus blog articles on the internet. The AI only has access to blog articles and low-end material.  Additionally, AIs regularly include information from cult websites. (Even AIs that claim to be scholarly have been tested and shown to be using primarily non-peer-reviewed and unedited low-end material.)

AI at the University

While in many contexts AI may be appropriate (e.g. some work settings, personal learning situations,…), it cannot be used in the academic setting. There is a temptation to use AI for your assignments for writing help or research. You may not use AI to generate material and then reword it or try to make it your own. AI is not a proper research tool. It uses non-academic and untrustworthy internet information (sometimes from cult websites).

Please be aware that we use detection software in Populi to flag AI-generated work. All faculty are asked to check student submissions for AI content, and violations of our Academic Integrity Policy may result in a failing grade on the assignment, removal from the course, or even suspension/expulsion from your program. Colleges have the means to go back and check every assignment a student has ever submitted when AI use (or plagiarism) is suspected.

Use Grammarly

Please do use grammar and spellcheck features (these are highly needed). Grammarly is required for many assignments to help you with your original writing. However, you may NOT use Grammarly AI features that rewrite your essays (these are clearly labeled as AI). You are not permitted to copy your work into AI platforms for editing, refining, and rewriting. If you do so, the AI will generate new content, and your work will be flagged as being written by AI.

We would remind all students that academic integrity is breached whenever unoriginal content is submitted by a student. The full policy can be found on our Code of Conduct Page and in our Academic Integrity Policy. In essence, using AI robs the opportunity of your heart and mind being transformed by the work of the Holy Spirit through your academic efforts.
